Delta Smelt
The delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1993. Factors thought to have contributed to the decline of the species include reductions in freshwater outflow, entrainment losses to water diversions, entrainment at power plant intakes, changes in abundance and composition of food organisms, environmental contaminants and competition and predation from exotic invasive aquatic species.
