My research is focused on understanding the processes by which the visible world is constructed by the brain. I am especially interested in cataloguing the dimensions of preattentive visual sensitivity--that is, I would like to functionally characterize those processes that spontaneously discriminate between qualitatively different regions of the visual field. I use texture segmentation experiments to study these questions. I also collaborate with Roger Hanlon (Marine Biological Laboratories, Woods Hole, MA) studying camouflage and in particular the camouflage patterning responses of cuttlefish
